Pac-Man 256 is a modernized and reimagined version of the classic pellet and quarter eating arcade game, well known as one of the founding fathers of the industry as a whole.
While you may look back at Pac-Man as a relic of a time long past, 256 has found several ways to spice up gameplay. First and foremost, the map has been transformed into an endless maze, changing high scores from how many levels you clear, to how far you can make it. To add to the challenge, you are being chased down, not only by the ghosts, but also an expanding glitch that consumes the map. The ghosts themselves also have unique attack patterns just like in the original Pac-Man corresponding to their color, but unlike the original, 256 has added many more ghosts. This forces the players to think and move quickly, to avoid a game over.
Next there are the powerups, of course there is still the original power pellet which turns the ghosts blue and allows Pac-Man to eat them. But that’s not all, in the menu you can pick 3 from a huge pool of unlockable unique power ups you want to have show up throughout the level in addition to the power pellets. These powers include a laser which Pac-Man can use to vaporize ghosts, a bomb that allows him to blow up any ghost he comes into contact with and any nearby, a tornado that sucks up ghosts, and even more than I could probably list and explain here.
Local co-op is also a new feature in this game, allowing for friends to compete for high scores together, and with Steam Remote Play, friends on Steam can invite each other for online co-op sessions as well!
Gameplay on the Symgym is intense and very fun. In order to move you must constantly keep your legs in motion, allowing for fun and immersive control of Pac-Man’s movement. In order to change directions you must use your arms, creating a very enjoyable and immersive experience. I personally found this to be one of the most fun games to play on Symgym yet, part of it is the simplicity that would allow even novice players to have a fun time. There really isn’t a difficult control scheme at all and this game was way easier to get engaged with right from the start. Moreover, I could see this really easily being a great comfort game, it is relaxing and fun, which actually helps the workout you get on the device quite a lot since there isn’t terribly much to think about.
Overall this is probably one of the best games yet for the Symgym.
